The Village of Pinecrest became the latest municipality to enjoy the benefits of a Nicklaus Children’s Hospital outpatient facility in 2017. The year marked the opening of the Nicklaus Children’s Pinecrest Urgent Care and a new Sports Health Center, both situated in Pinecrest’s Suniland Shopping Center along high-profile U.S. 1 (South Dixie Highway).

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Personalized Medicine Initiative made a giant leap forward in 2017, thanks to a $7 million donation from philanthropist Denny Sanford and Sanford Health. This transformative gift is fast-tracking the hospital’s commitment to harnessing the latest developments in science, genomics and technology to speed effective treatments for pediatric conditions, all with the goal of optimizing benefits and minimizing side effects.

Nicklaus Children's Programs Again Ranked Among the Nation's Best

2017 was another great year for Nicklaus Children's specialty programs. Eight programs were again identified among the best in the nation, according to U.S.News & World Report's 2017-18 "Best Children's Hospitals" rankings. No other hospital in florida had more ranked pediatric programs.

National Recognition

Nicklaus Children's Hospital Recipient of Record Number of Beacon Awards

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) in 2017 again designated Nicklaus Children's Hospital as a premier institution for patient care, bestowing two more unit-based Beacon Awards for Excellence that brought the hospital's total number of Beacon Awards to six, a distinction no other children's hospital in the nation currently holds. The newly awarded units include 3 Northeast (dialysis, gastroenterology), with a gold-level Beacon Award, and 2 East (pre- and post-surgical unit) with a silver-level Beacon Award. The hospital's three intensive care units (pediatric, neonatal and cardiac) and the 2 North Unit (infant care and observation) each received gold-level Beacon Awards in 2016.

Nicklaus Children’s was again recognized as a Best Children’s Hospital and a Best Children’s Hospital for Emergency Care by the Women’s Choice Award. The designation was based on data provided by children’s hospitals across the country. Hospitals are selected based on availability of key services and capabilities.

Health System is Recipient of Davies Award for Information Technology Excellence

Nicklaus Children’s Health System was the recipient of the 2017 Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence, presented by Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS), a non-profit organization focused on better health through information technology. The Davies Award recognizes organizations that have utilized health information technology to substantially improve patient outcomes and value. Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is the first hospital in Florida to receive the Davies Enterprise Award.

Health System Recognized for Optimizing Financial Communications

Nicklaus Children’s Health System achieved recognition in 2017 as an adopter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s Patient Financial Communications Best Practices®. As a Best Practices adopter, the health system demonstrated that it follows nearly 100 best practices covering all aspects of financial interactions that take place in a variety of care settings.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital was selected a 2017 Most Wired Hospital by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Health Forum. The 19th Annual Health Care’s Most Wired® survey, recognized hospitals that use emerging technology to enhance patient care and privacy.

Computerworld Again Names Health System Among Best Places to Work in IT

Computerworld named Nicklaus Children’s Health System in its Best Places to Work in IT list for 2017. The system was recognized as third among midsize organizations for being a leading institution in providing excellence in information technology, while offering great benefits and compensation for employees. The health system and its flagship, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, have been consecutively recognized in the listing since 2012.

Nicklaus Children’s Receives Full Accreditation from the Association of Human Research Protection Programs

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital was once again awarded full accreditation from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc., (AAHRPP). 
Accreditation is an achievement that reflects Nicklaus Children’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of research participants. The hospital was the first pediatric facility in the state and one of the few children’s hospitals in the nation to receive accreditation from AAHRPP in 2009.

Jackie Gonzalez, CNO, Honored as Health Care Hero

Jackie Gonzalez, DN, MSN, ARNP, Senior Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, was recognized by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce as a 2017 Health Care Hero in the nursing category. Dr. Gonzalez was honored for her leadership and commitment to patient safety, which gave rise to the hospital’s Humpty Dumpty Falls Prevention Program, now in use in more than 1,300 hospitals around the globe.

Marcia Diaz de Villegas Named Among Power Leaders in Marketing

Marcia Diaz de Villegas, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Nicklaus Children’s Health System, was named to South Florida Business Journal’s 2017 List of Power Leaders in Marketing. The nominations recognize top marketing executives who have led organizations through ever-changing media convergence and executed marketing campaigns that are supported by all media platforms.
